“How the hell did they find us?” Dakota gestured at the monitors in the operations room. It was some time later and full assessment of the damage was still in progress.

“Comms. Has to be that,” said Cyrus. “It’s the only weak point with the ship. They must have been sifting through communication traffic in this sector.”

“Maybe they have node-runners,” Scott considered.

“That was a Xiang Zu ship. Only VanHeilding uses node-runners.” Miranda shook her head.

“Then perhaps VanHeilding sees this rogue QI as a top priority, so it donates a team to help them seek it out,” Scott continued.

“What the heck is a node-runner?” Dakota looked confused.

“Genetically enhanced humans with the ability to jack-in to the grid and manipulate the data-stream through thought alone,” Miranda rattled off a quick definition.

“Jesus, are you serious? They can actually do that?” Dakota eyebrows rose halfway up his forehead.

“Yep. They can take over almost any system.” Miranda gestured in the vague direction of the crippled ship. “That ship we came here in has been hardened against a node-runner attack. That’s the reason we can’t control it remotely, the reason it doesn't have an AI. But as Cyrus said, the only weak point is comms.”

Dakota shook his head. Clearly he was having difficulty in comprehending this revelation.
